One year ago today my world was rocked, when I was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer. We could hardly believe it when the doctor told us the news.  Are you kidding me? How did I get lung cancer?  I’m only 42, I don’t smoke and I don’t even drink.  Maybe I should start!  Okay, then I ask, “Doc, tell me really, how bad is it?” I was told I had less than a year to live. Now that was direct and to the point!  The problem with that diagnosis is that I don’t listen very well.

Many people who receive a diagnosis like mine automatically throw in the towel, based on what their doctor has said.  Please don’t.  I know the doctors are going by their experience and statistics, but I ask you to fight. I’m a fighter no doubt.  A little bit of sass has really helped me on this journey.  I have stayed focused on healing and think my martial arts training has really helped to prepare me for this journey. I continue to stay strong and take tae kwon do a couple times a week.

I am also a woman of faith. I have continued on my path of being a “salty Christian”.  I continue to learn the Word of God and have total faith that I am healed.  The Bible says in  Matthew 21:22…“If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”I believe, when I pray, that my prayers have been answered.

So today, one year after being diagnosed with cancer, if you ask me what I have done to get this far, I would say:

1. Faith in the Lord. Have faith in knowing that although you don’t know what is around that corner, God does.  Stay strong in faith;

2. Be happy and positive. There is no time to be a Debbie Downer. Life is full of blessings.  All you need to do is open your eyes;

3. Get up off your dupa. I know how tired you can get from chemo, but you’ve got to get some exercise. Even if you just walk up and down the driveway or around the block. Please don’t just sit there and let life pass you by; and

4. Simply Enjoy Life. Get out there and live life.  Have fun, play with your kids, go dancing, play football, do whatever you can think of to have fun.

I am so pumped to have made it to one year.  I’m looking forward to the next. Keep Smiling!  Love you all.
